I am going completely raw for 21 days.

If you follow any of my social media accounts (they can be found over there on the right), then you will know that I have been unable to update maximumvegan.com or longplayerkitchen.com due to rehabbing a herniated disc in my neck. My C5 disc has bulged into my C6 nerve which is a nerve that covers your entire right arm. The result for me is a constant pins and needles in my thumb and an electric shock like pain when repetitively used. So for me, using a knife to chop has been out and it probably goes without saying, but the Mixed Martial Arts and running has had to take a back seat too.

For the last 10 weeks, I have been rehabbing my neck like a mad man under the guidance of my EXCELLENT physiotherapist, Livia Gluchowska – http://www.physiolabmelbourne.com.au – who also happens to be a World champion and black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and who coaches at my gym http://www.absolutemma.net.au. The physio is going very well and although I am back on track, it is still a long way off before I can start training again properly. I refuse to come back before I am ready.

Anyway, back to food, for the last 16 days I have been on a course of steroids (a really shitty experience that I would not recommend) and even though they have done their job in reducing the inflammation, I will do anything in my power to stop the inflammation from coming back, so the next 2 or 3 weeks will be vital in assessing if the steroids have just masked the pain or genuinely helped. I have done a load of research and the diet that gives maximum inflammation reduction seems to be a totally raw diet. The nutrients that can be taken in from eating 2000 – 2500 calories a day of uncooked fruit and veg is insane.

So raw I shall be….

I have decided to go for it for 21 days and then if it helps, adjust life after that. I love cooked food WAY too much to give it up forever but I could definitely see myself going to one cooked meal a day and raw for the rest. It is all research and I will know more in 22 days time as it begins tomorrow. I have no doubt that it will tough, but the one thing I am good at is planning and research. My spreadsheet for weekly food planning is verging on weirdness anyway so I have planned every minute of the next week already. I have made my almond milk, washed and prepared my leaves, been to the farmers market and spent way too much money on produce, purchased a new spiralizer and my cashews are soaking as I type this ready to be made into a vegan sour cream for my raw tacos tomorrow night. I know it will be hard but I will just remind myself that Nate Diaz eats completely raw in training camps!

I will document everything and write up a VERY real diary of my thoughts on the 21 days, good or bad.

I am also very aware that is not that wild and that thousands of people eat raw and have done for decades, but this will be for the people that are thinking about it, are keen on trying it or just want to laugh at me more than usual! If you are a raw advocate and have experience in eating entirely raw, I would love some tips to help me so please leave a comment!

I will be posting a lot of the recipes, preparation and results on here.

I promise I will never say rawsome again.

    1. Thanks very much. I lasted for the 21 days and it was definitely eye opening, but not something I think I could sustain for a long period of time, I LOVE cooked food way too much….
